We still had a lot of places we wanted to go on our second day in Barcelona, so we rented bikes and gave ourselves a self guided tour. I've never ridden a bike in a big city before so I was nervous. And no one wears bike helmets. We were riding next to big buses with no helmets! Crazy! But Barcelona is a very bike friendly city with bike lanes clearly marked. It was actually a very nice 3 hour ride.
The first place we stopped was at Casa Mila or La Pedrera, a building by architect Antoni Gaudi. Casa is house in Spanish and that is a big house! Gaudi is responsible for most of the architecture we saw in Barcelona.
Down the street is another Gaudi house. The Battlo family lived here so the name is Casa Battlo. Can you imagine living in this house? Quite unique to say the least.
The pictures don't do the house justice. The entire front of the house is made of mosaic tiles. We tried to get a close up picture to see the details. I wonder how long it took Gaudi to place all those tiles?
After looking at Gaudi's work, we rode through the Gothic Quarter. This ancient town is fun to bike around in. The roads are old cobblestone and the streets are very narrow. Can you see the van on this street? Not a lot of passing room!
The architecture here dates back to the 15th century. It's amazing how well preserved these buildings are, like this Cathedral.
Before returning our bikes we did a quick ride around the Port de Barcelona. Earl thought the Barbie boat was humorous.
